Bell Wine Cellars: A Hidden Gem in Napa Valley

Wine tasting on the patio at Eleven Eleven Winery in Napa

Bell Wine Cellars is one of those Napa Valley hidden gems that delivers a refined yet unpretentious wine country experience. Family-owned since 1991, this boutique winery specializes in small-lot, single-clone Cabernet Sauvignon, with a focus on terroir, vineyard expression, and the unique characteristics of grape clones.

Rather than blending away the differences between vineyards and clones, Bell embraces them, allowing each wine to express its own character and sense of place.

Their approach gives wine lovers an opportunity to explore how different Cabernet clones and vineyard sites can influence the finished wine. Bell produces Cabernet from several Napa Valley AVAs, including Rutherford, St. Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, and Yountville.

That philosophy is what makes a visit to Bell particularly interesting. You're not simply tasting Napa Cabernet, you’re getting a chance to experience how clone, vineyard, soil, and microclimate can shape the personality of the wine.

Nestled among oak trees, stainless-steel tanks, and aging barrels, the Bell Wine Cellars tasting room offers an immersive “Grape to Glass” experience. Guests can enjoy vineyard strolls, tank and barrel walkthroughs, and guided tastings featuring seasonal wines.

Wine Review: 2021 Bell Wine Cellars Faniani Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Bottle of 2021 Bell Wine Cellars Faniani Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2021 Bell Wine Cellars Faniani Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, a single-vineyard wine from Napa Valley’s Coombsville AVA.

Coombsville is one of Napa Valley’s cooler sub-appellations, benefiting from the influence of San Pablo Bay. Located just southeast of the city of Napa, the area is known for its cooler temperatures, volcanic soils, and Cabernet Sauvignon with structure, freshness, and elegance.

Faniani Vineyard is a six-acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard planted by Kelly Faniani. The fruit from this vineyard is particularly well suited to Bell Wine Cellars’ approach to single-clone and single-vineyard wines.

Why do single-vineyard wines stand out? I particularly enjoy about this wine is its single-vineyard designation. At least 95% of the fruit must come from the named vineyard, allowing the site itself to become part of the wine’s identity rather than blending fruit from multiple locations.

Typically single-vineyard wines showcase premium vineyard sites and fruit in the bottle.

I always encourage visitors to seek out single-vineyard wines as they offer a chance to experience the unique character of a specific place.

The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and spent 20 months aging in French oak, with 83% new oak. At 14.9% alcohol, this is a serious Cabernet with plenty of structure and aging potential.

In the glass, the wine shows a very dark ruby color with moderate staining and impressive opacity. The slow-moving legs on the glass are consistent with the wine's nearly 15% alcohol.

On the nose, there is a definite presence of French oak, followed by layers of dark fruit and a combination of red and black fruit characteristics. There’s also a lush, vibrant quality that draws you in.

What surprised me most was the palate. Despite the intensity suggested by the nose, the wine is softer and somewhat leaner than I initially expected. To me, that demonstrates balance on the part of the winemaker.

There is medium acidity and medium-plus tannin, along with dark fruit, oak, and a nice underlying structure. Rather than allowing the tannins or oak to dominate, the components work together to create harmony.

Overall: A structured and elegant single-vineyard Cabernet with dark fruit, French oak, and excellent aging potential.

Price: $109

Alcohol: 14.9%

Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Oak: 20 months in French oak, 83% new

AVA: Coombsville, Napa Valley

My recommendation: Buy it, and rest it for several years in the bottle.

Food Pairings: Beef Tenderloin with Bordelaise Sauce, Garlic-Rosemary Grilled Lamb Chops, and Braised Short Ribs
