Wine Review: 2022 Calesa Vineyard Pinot Noir -- Eleven Eleven Winery

Bottle of Calesa Vineyard Pinot Noir from Eleven Eleven Winery in Napa

The 2022 Calesa Vineyard Pinot Noir from Eleven Eleven Winery is an excellent example of what the Petaluma Gap region can produce: cool-climate wines with character, richness, and structure, definitely an AVA to keep on the radar.

Calesa Vineyard sits in the Petaluma Gap, an AVA officially established in 2017 and known for its strong maritime influence. Afternoon fog and powerful winds coming through the gap create the cool conditions Pinot Noir loves.

The vineyard itself features steep hillsides and shallow, rocky, gravelly loam soils that force the vines to work their way deep into the ground for water and nutrients. The fruit is farmed by acclaimed grower Oscar Renteria, and Calesa Vineyard is also a source for several highly regarded Napa producers: Chappellet and B Cellars.

This wine is 100% Pinot Noir, aged for 16 months in French oak, with 40% new wood. Only 560 cases were produced, making this a relatively small-production wine, and at around $75 retail, this is definitely a more serious, structured expression of Pinot Noir.

In the glass, it shows a light-to-medium ruby color with very little staining, just as you would expect from the naturally thin-skinned Pinot Noir grape. The nose immediately draws you in with luscious, ripe red fruit, juicy and expressive right from the start.

On the palate, those red-fruit characteristics begin to evolve into darker fruit through the mid-palate and finish. There’s also a noticeable influence from the French oak, bringing vanilla and toasted notes into the wine. I also picked up hints of black tea, mineral, and earthy tones toward the finish.

At 14.8%, the alcohol is noticeable initially, and I think this is a wine that benefits from some time to open in the glass. Give it a good decant or let it open for a while before judging it. What really impressed me, however, was the balance.

When evaluating wine, I always look at how the major components- acidity, tannin, oak, fruit, and alcohol work together. When a winemaker gets that balance right, no single component dominates the palate. Instead, everything comes together in harmony.

That’s what I found here. The wine is round, luscious, and elegant, with balanced acidity, softened tannins, and enough structure from the oak and fruit to suggest that this bottle has plenty of life ahead of it.

I’d happily drink this Pinot Noir today, but I think it could become even more interesting with another 3–5 years in the bottle, allowing the oak and alcohol to integrate further.

With proper storage, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this wine develop beautifully over a much longer period.

Overall: A rich and expressive Petaluma GAP Pinot Noir that combines ripe fruit, French oak, earth, and minerality with nice balance and elegance.

Price: ~$75

Alcohol: 14.8%

Production: 560 cases

My recommendation: Buy it, and give it some time to age in the bottle

Food Pairings: Roasted Herb Crusted Chicken, Mushroom Risotto, Seared Duck Confit, and Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Cherry Glaze
