If you’re exploring Napa with the 2026 Vine Pass, Robert Biale Vineyards is a stop that delivers outstanding wines, views, and hospitality!
Founded in 1991 by Robert Biale, the winery is built on a deeply rooted Italian-American family legacy and a commitment to preserving Napa Valley’s heritage varietals, especially Zinfandel. Many of their vineyard sources are truly historic, with some vines dating back to the 1880s, producing fruit with remarkable depth and character. While Zinfandel is the heart of their program, they also craft standout Petite Sirah and other small-lot wines that reflect old-vine intensity and careful farming.
Their flagship Black Chicken Zinfandel is both a nod to family history and a benchmark Napa Zinfandel, known for its balance of ripe fruit, spice, and structure. Across the portfolio, the focus is on site-driven wines that highlight Napa’s diverse vineyard expressions, particularly from the Oak Knoll District and surrounding areas.

The winery itself sits in the Oak Knoll AVA on a historic family property, and the experience feels refreshingly unpolished in the best way. Tastings are typically seated on a relaxed back porch overlooking sunlit vineyards and rolling hills, less formal than many Napa destinations, and more personal. It’s the kind of place where storytelling, farming, and winemaking all come together naturally.
With your Vine Pass, you’ll receive $25 off the Valley Vista tasting, making it an easy addition to your itinerary and a great way to experience one of Napa’s most respected producers at a bit of a value.
For those seeking authenticity, history, and classic Napa Valley Zinfandel, Robert Biale Vineyards is well worth a visit.
Wine Review: 2023 Black Chicken Zinfandel -- Robert Biale Vineyards

Few Napa Valley Zinfandels carry a story as colorful as “Black Chicken.” The name traces back to the 1940s, when 14-year-old Aldo Biale helped his family sell eggs and produce, while discreetly offering jugs of homemade wine over a party-line phone using the code phrase “black chicken.” Today, that legacy lives on in one of the region’s most iconic wines, crafted primarily from estate vineyards in the Oak Knoll District.
The 2023 vintage stands out as one of the coolest in recent memory. After years of drought, abundant winter rains replenished groundwater and set the stage for a long, moderate growing season. A delayed bud break and even ripening conditions contributed to exceptional balance and freshness. The wine earned an impressive 94 points from critic James Suckling.
In appearance, it is light ruby with slight opaqueness and minimal staining, slow-forming legs, indicative of its 14.7% alcohol, typical for Zinfandel. On the nose, it opens with classic varietal intensity: jammy black fruits with black pepper, toasted oak, and a juicy ripeness. The palate delivers medium acidity and high alcohol, yet remains nicely composed, not overpowering. Aged for 15 months in French oak (30% new), the wine carries a pronounced oak influence that integrates into flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate, tobacco, and a touch of tar. Subtle earthiness and minerality add to the wine's complexity.
Despite its power, the wine leans slightly lighter and softer than expected, an indication of careful winemaking and excellent balance. The finish is long and defined by a signature peppery spice and lingering oak warmth.
A beautifully structured and expressive Zinfandel, this 2023 vintage should soften and improve nicely over the next 10–15 years. A standout bottle and a must-try for Zinfandel drinkers.
