Napa Valley is a tale of two growing locations, and it's natural dramatic contrast: the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains that frame the region and the valley floor nestled between them.
While both produce outstanding fruit, the mountain vineyards above the fog line have a character all their own, shaped by elevation, temperature, sun, wind, soil, and sheer exposure to the elements.
Elevated Growing Conditions: Sunlight, Fog, and Airflow

One of Napa’s most influential climatic features is its daily marine fog, drawn inland from San Pablo Bay. This fog settles low in the early morning and retreats as the sun climbs, essentially acting like a natural blanket for the valley. In the summertime, it keeps the mountain vineyards cool, while in the wintertime, it warms them.
Valley floor vineyards lie below this fog layer, often protected from the full force of the sun until the fog burns off later in the morning. In contrast, mountain vineyards rising roughly above 1,400 feet sit in sunlight even as the fog still hugs the valley floor.
Above the fogline, growing benefits:
More direct sunlight early in the day helps grapes develop and ripen more fully.
Lower diurnal temperature ranges extend the growing season and allow flavors, tannins, and acids to develop differently.
Better airflow and reduced disease pressure, since winds on exposed slopes help dry foliage and reduce rot risk.
Tannin and Flavor: Small Berries, Big Structure

One of the most profound effects of mountain conditions is their influence on the berries themselves:
Smaller berries with thicker skins, thanks to lower soil moisture, higher sun exposure, and vine stress, result in greater skin-to-juice ratios. The skin houses much of a grape’s color, phenolics, and tannins, giving mountain fruit intense pigment and structure.
Wines from these grapes often show deeper color, richer dark fruit profiles, and more pronounced tannic frameworks than their valley floor counterparts.
These richer, more structured tannins help mountain wines age gracefully and reveal complexity over time.
Valley floor fruit tends to produce rounder, more plush fruit characteristics, lusher berry flavors with softer tannins that are often approachable earlier in their life.

Keenan Winery: A Historic Growing Legacy

Perched high on Spring Mountain, Keenan Winery has been crafting estate-grown, small-lot Bordeaux-style wines since the 1970s, earning a reputation as one of Napa Valley’s pioneering mountain estates. Sitting at roughly 1,700 feet in elevation, Keenan’s vineyards rise above the fog line, where consistent sunlight, cooling mountain breezes, and rugged, well-drained soils create an ideal environment for slow, even ripening. The steep hillsides challenge the vines, forcing them to grow roots deep into the rocky terrain and naturally limiting yields. These conditions reward patience and precision in the vineyard.
The result is Cabernet Sauvignon and other varietals that showcase intensity without excess, marrying concentrated dark fruit with freshness and restraint. Firm yet expressive tannins provide structure and longevity, while layered aromatics and mineral-driven nuance reflect both the elevation and the distinct character of Spring Mountain, hallmarks of truly compelling mountain fruit.
Schweiger Vineyards: The Summit of Spring Mountain

At about 2,000 feet above the valley floor, Schweiger Vineyards has long been a standout in Napa Valley’s Spring Mountain District, known for its dramatic setting and expressive mountain-grown wines. The estate’s steep, terraced vineyards are carved into rugged hillsides of volcanic soils, naturally limiting vine vigor and producing small, intensely flavored berries with thick skins, key contributors to the winery’s hallmark depth, color, and structure.
This elevated site benefits from early morning sunlight above the fog line and cooling summer breezes that temper daytime heat, extending the growing season and allowing grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The resulting wines, particularly Schweiger’s Cabernets and proprietary blends, are defined by focused fruit intensity, refined tannins, and a striking balance between power and elegance, embodying the classic traits of Napa Valley mountain fruit.
Sherwin Family Vineyards: Rebuilt From the Ashes

In 2020, the devastating Glass Fire swept through much of Napa Valley’s Spring Mountain District, and Sherwin Family Winery Napa was among the estates to suffer profound loss. On September 28th, the fire destroyed their original winery building, marking a heartbreaking chapter in the family’s history.
In the years since, the Sherwins have rebuilt with intention and resilience, emerging with a new winery that today serves as both their production facility and welcoming tasting room.
Perched near the summit of Spring Mountain, Sherwin Family Vineyards is a boutique estate that offers a compelling expression of elevated Napa Valley terroir. Their hillside vineyards, defined by free-draining soils and abundant mountain sun, produce Cabernet Sauvignon of remarkable concentration, depth, and age-worthy structure.
